A valley carries the water from two roof slopes into one channel, so it deals with more water than any other part of the roof. When it fails the leak is usually persistent, often shows up in an awkward part of the house, and does not respond to anything done to the tiles around it.

Signs you need valley replacements work

Why cement in a valley always fails
It is very common to find a valley that somebody has filled with sand and cement, either to stop a leak or to tidy up badly cut tiles. It never lasts. Cement is rigid, the valley moves, and the mortar cracks along its whole length. Worse, it blocks the channel, so water that should be running away sits against the tile edges and finds its way underneath.
A valley should be a free running channel with the tiles cut cleanly to either side of it and nothing filling the middle. When we re-line a valley we take the covering back far enough to lay new boarding and lining properly, then re-lay the tiles to a straight cut line. It costs more than filling it with mortar and it is the difference between a repair and a fix.
Worth knowing. Valley work means lifting the tiles either side, so it is the right moment to check the underlay in the area at the same time.
What affects the price of valley replacements
We will not put a figure on this page, because a roof price given without seeing the roof is a guess. These are the things that actually move the number:

- Whether the boarding underneath is sound

Questions about valley replacements
How do I know it is the valley leaking?
Valley leaks usually show up in the room below the junction of two roof slopes and keep coming back after tiles have been replaced. From the roof a failed valley is normally obvious, which is why we look before quoting.
Is lead still the best material for a valley?
Properly laid lead on sound boarding is still the benchmark and it lasts a very long time. GRP troughs are a good modern alternative, particularly where lead theft has been a problem locally.
Can a valley be repaired rather than replaced?
Sometimes a short section can be patched, but a valley that has cracked once is usually near the end of its service life along its whole run. We will tell you which you are looking at.
How long does a valley replacement take?
Most domestic valleys are a one to two day job with access in place, depending on length and how much tiling has to be lifted back.
