Signs you need dry ridge and dry verge work

Why mortar fails and dry fixing does not
Mortar is rigid and a roof is not. Timber moves with heat and moisture, the ridge tiles move with it, and eventually the bond breaks. Once one joint is open, water gets behind the bedding, frost does the rest, and the failure spreads along the ridge.
A dry system fixes each ridge tile mechanically to a batten with a ventilated union between tiles. Nothing depends on a rigid bond, the ridge can move, and the roof vents at the highest point where warm moist air actually collects. Current British Standard practice has moved this way for good reason, and on any re-roof we would fit dry fixed ridge and verge as standard.
Worth knowing. Converting an existing roof to dry ridge is a job in its own right and does not need the whole roof stripping. On most houses it is a one to two day job with the right access.
What affects the price of dry ridge and dry verge
We will not put a figure on this page, because a roof price given without seeing the roof is a guess. These are the things that actually move the number:

Questions about dry ridge and dry verge
Do I need to re-roof to get dry ridge?
No. Converting the ridge and verge is a standalone job on an otherwise sound roof, and it is one of the better value pieces of roofing work you can have done.
Is dry ridge better than mortar?
On the vast majority of modern roofs, yes. It does not rely on a rigid bond, it vents the ridge, and it will not be dropping onto your drive in fifteen years. On some period properties mortar is still the appropriate detail and we will tell you when that applies.
Will it change how the roof looks?
Barely. Dry ridge keeps the same ridge tiles, so from the ground the main difference is a neat continuous line rather than mortar joints. Dry verge changes the gable edge a little and comes in colours to match the roof.
How long does dry ridge and verge take?
Typically one to two days on a standard house once access is in place, weather allowing.
